Admissions Policies and Procedures

Applications are accepted year round.

For admissions information, email admissions@theoakwoodschool.org.

The Oakwood School seeks students who demonstrate characteristics consistent with the mission of the school. Emphasis is placed on attracting a diverse student body who will meet the challenges of the curriculum and who possess the potential for success in our academic setting. Students with a variety of talents, experiences, and backgrounds are admitted based on academic achievement, academic testing, personal interviews, and teacher recommendations. The goal of the admissions process is to determine whether Oakwood is a good environment for the students social, emotional, and intellectual development.

ADMISSION PROCESS PRE-KINDERGARTEN

  • Prospective Pre-Kindergarten students must be four years of age by August 31 of enrollment year.
  • To initiate the admission process, parents must complete the application form and schedule a school visit with the Director of Admissions.
  • Group visits of six to eight children occur in January, during which the children participate in group-time, gross motor screening, fine motor screening, and interactions with the teachers and other candidates.
  • If a prospective Pre-Kindergarten child applies after the regular screening for candidates has occurred, the prospective student has a class visit in the current Pre-Kindergarten class and/or an individual screening.
  • The Admissions Committee meets to discuss the classroom observations and the teacher recommendations (if the child has previously attended a pre-school) to determine if The Oakwood School is the right match for the applicant.
  • The Admission Committee informs the parents of its decision by mail.

ADMISSION PROCESS KINDERGARTEN

  • Prospective Kindergarten Students must be five years of age by August 31 of enrollment year.
  • To initiate the admission process, parents complete the application form and schedule a school visit with the Director of Admissions.
  • Individual developmental screening occurs at a time convenient for the family. The Oakwood School believes that the developmental age of the child is more meaningful than the chronological age.
  • Group visits of six to eight children occur in January, during which they participate in group time, gross motor screening, fine motor screening, interactions with the teachers and the other candidates.
  • If a prospective Kindergarten child applies after the regular screening for candidates has occurred, the prospective student has an individual screening and a class visit in a current Kindergarten class.
  • The Admissions Committee meets to discuss the screening results, the teacher recommendations, and the classroom observations to determine if The Oakwood School is the right match for the applicant.
  • The Admissions Committee informs the parents of its decision by mail.

ADMISSION PROCESS OTHER GRADES

  • To initiate the admission process, parents complete the application form and schedule a school visit with the Director of Admissions.
  • Applicants take a developmentally appropriate achievement test.
  • Children visit an appropriate classroom for a day and interact with the students and teachers.
  • Middle School and Upper School candidates are required to submit an applicant response questionnaire and parents of those candidates complete a parent questionnaire.
  • The Admissions Committee informs the parents of its decision by mail.
  • When a student who has left Oakwood wants to return to the school, s/he must reapply to the school if a full semester has passed since her/his departure.
