Ways of Giving

Since the 1700’s, independent schools have provided the finest education for American families. In some cases, the tax law actually encourages donors to create charitable gifts which benefit both the school and enables you, the donor, to leverage your gift in a very dramatic way.

We often receive questions from prospective donors about how gifts can be made, and at times they want to know if the school accepts gifts other than cash or a check. Generally, our answer is that what’s good for you, the donor, is good for the school! That’s why we will consider accepting any legal gift which conforms to the mission and goals of our school.

The Oakwood School is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and welcomes gifts of all types. There are a variety of ways to make your gift.

Gifts of Securities

A gift of appreciated securities (stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares) that you have held for more than one year is frequently the most economical way to make a gift. If you contribute appreciated securities to The Oakwood School, you receive a two-fold income tax benefit: a charitable deduction for the present fair market value and no capital gains tax on the appreciation.

Matching Gifts

Gifts In-Kind

Gifts in-kind may include donated goods or professional services offered without compensation. Tangible personal property, such as art, antiques, musical instruments, or other items that can be used by Oakwood for educational purposes are welcomed. Gift in-kind donors receive an income tax deduction notice for the market value of the property based on an independent appraisal.

The Oakwood School’s gift year ends June 30, but you may want to contribute by December 31 to take advantage of current year tax benefits. We strongly recommend you consult with your attorney or tax advisor as you research the most appropriate ways to give to The Oakwood School.
