Middle School Clubs and Intramural Program

The Oakwood Geography Club, for students in grades 4 – 8, meets every Tuesday afternoon from 3 – 4:15 pm in Ms. Halligan's Spanish classroom. There are geography learning games, puzzles, fun quizzes and more. The goal is to prepare a school-level team for the National Geographic Society's Annual Geography Bee. Geography geeks unite! Dues for the year are $20 to cover snack costs. Club Advisors are Ms. Halligan and Ms. Lust.

The Middle School Book Club meetings are held once a week during lunch in the lower school library. Students read and discuss books that encourage students to analyze literature and find relevance in and parallels to modern politics, society, lifestyles and personal values. The club is open to all 6th and 7th graders. Club Advisor is Mrs. Jenks.

Middle School Homework Club will meet every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:15 - 4:00 pm in Mrs. Rinaldi's room. The purpose of the club is to provide students with a quiet and structured environment where they can complete some of their homework assignments, seek help with homework, work on projects, and seek extra help in math. Students will be allowed to work in small groups and help each other with their work so the room will not be absolutely quiet. Additionally, students who finish their homework will be asked to help others or read quietly. There is no club fee, although parents may be asked periodically to donate healthy snack foods to the program. Club Advisor is Mrs. Rinaldi.
Please note, students who are not picked up by 4:10 pm will be sent to Extended Day, where there is a charge for after-school care.

Middle School Walking Club (Beginning in October 2009) "We walk so we can soar!" Oakwood's 41 beautiful acres will be the meeting place for the MS Walking Club, which will meet during lunch-recess and give students time for fresh air and exercise in the middle of the day. Pedometers in hand, club members will walk towards a goal of 100 miles during the school year. Club Advisor is Mrs. Ann Rinaldi

The Math Club is all about fun and learning math facts. The goal is that club members will gain "fact power" as they master basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division math facts. Math Club is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at the beginning of the school year, and 2nd graders are invited to join in January. The club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month right after school in Mrs. Brown's classroom. Club Advisor is Mrs. Brown.

The Ecology Club provides an opportunity for students to educate out community about the importance of being responsible environmental stewards. Meetings are held after school throughout the year. Activities are planned for students to explore the world around them and to participate in community service. Club Advisor is Mrs. Riley.

The Science Fair Club allows interested students to participate in real-life research opportunities. Faculty and students collaborate on projects. A Science Fair is held at school and winners proceed to regional, state, and national competitions. Club Advisor is Mrs. Riley.

The Envirothon program is a competitive event for middle school teams to compete at a Natural Resources Knowledge and Ecology Field Day against other high school and middle school teams. It stimulates, reinforces, and enhances students' interest in the environment and our state's natural resources. Resource subject areas are: Soils/land use, Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatic Ecology, and other current environmental issues.

The intramural program at Oakwood serves students in grades 2-6, meets after school at Oakwood, and is run by parent volunteers. The program is designed to be a fun, flexible program that introduces young players to the rules and skills of a sport each season: fall, winter, and spring. Co-ed groups of students in grades 2 and 3 practice together, students in grades 4 and 5 practice together, and students in grade 6 play in boy or girl groups. The groups practice two or three afternoons a week, and students are encouraged to attend as many practices as possible.

Interscholastic sports begin in grade 7 at Oakwood. This information is fully explained on the Oakwood website under the Athletics link.
