Welcome to The Oakwood School

The Oakwood School has grown dramatically over the past decade to encompass grades kindergarten through eleven.  Next year, it will add grade twelve, graduating its first class in 2009.  Growth and success is a tribute to all who shared, built, and contributed to the dream of an independent school to serve Greenville and the surrounding area.

The reasons for the success of the school are many and varied. They include the faculty who bring experience and education to the school with a sense of optimism and high expectation.  The Board of Trustees, which has given time, insight, and guidance in building excellence and a vision of what Oakwood will become in the East Carolina region now and in the future. There are also the parents who seek to have a challenging, developmentally appropriate, and well-rounded education for their children in a beautiful, safe, and secure setting.  Most important, there are the students who are curious, inquiring, and diligent in pursuit of their own learning.  Small class size and access to high levels of technology allow students to question and receive positive reinforcement, in addition to being able to pursue research through the school’s laptop program. Finally, there are the many friends of Oakwood in the community of Greenville and North Carolina who, through their generosity, have enabled four beautiful buildings to be built in which we can house over 400 students in the next few years.

In visiting Oakwood, one is struck by the cheerful faces of the students as they go about learning and taking an interest in the process at hand.  The students accept that they are responsible for their own learning, and willingly take the necessary risks essential for academic growth.

The outstanding faculty use a student centered approach, experiential learning in the sciences, and cross-disciplinary opportunities to enable students to reach their optimal potentials.  This in-depth preparation in the Lower and Middle divisions develops students for success in a demanding Upper school.  The goal is to prepare students for life by providing a well-rounded education through which they will discover personal interests and directions that they can pursue throughout their lives.  In this way, they will be prepared not only for entrance to the colleges of their choice, but to succeed with ease and enjoyment once they are admitted to those institutions.

The Oakwood School has accomplished much in its short life.  Most importantly, it has developed a cohesive sense of community and warmth in its welcome to new families.  It is a very special place!  Its future is exciting!  As you view this site, please peruse it carefully as it should provide you with any information you require.  Better yet, if you are in the area, please come and visit The Oakwood School, so that you can judge for yourself as to the quality of this fine and growing community.
